General Grant tree planting monument

The General Grant tree planting monument is in Ueno Park close to the main gate of Ueno Zoo. The previous location used to be difficult to find, but the small theme park next door has disappeared so it is easier to find.

He was the 18th President of the United States, serving two terms from 1869 to 1877. After that, he traveled around the world and he also came to Japan. In August 1879, General Grant came to Japan. A large reception was held for him here in Ueno Park. As a memorial, he planted a cypress and his wife planted a yulan.

In August 1929, the monument was built here because we afraid that the origin of the tree planting would be forgotten. The monument has a bust of him in the center. Explanations written in Japanese and English are on both sides. It describes his biography, about the large reception and the origin of the tree planting. His words “Let us have peace” are engraved below the bust.

Now, the trees are growing fully and flowers are offered here every year.
