Hitotsu-bashi-mon gate of Edo Castle

Hitotsu-bashi-Tokugawa family is what we usually call Hitotsu-bashi family. The Hitotsu-bashi family, one of the three lords called Gosankyō, was a branch of the Tokugawa shōgun family. It was possible to adopt a child if the shōgun family had no succession. Its ancestor was Munetada (1721~1764), the fourth son of the eigth shōgun Yoshimine(1684~1751). In 1741, he was given a mansion inside of Hitotsu-bashi-mon gate, and started living there.

There is an old picture there that was taken from Hirakawa-bashi Bridge. The picture shows Hitotsu-bashi-mon gate and a guard house. They are not there anymore. Now, there are some buildings, wide roads and a motorway (speedway), but there is still a little part of the stone wall there.

There is a new Hitotsu-bashi Bridge now. The bridge was built in 1925, and it is made of stone and concrete. It was the ruins of the monuments of Hitotsu-bashi family’s mansion close to the bridge. The monument says “The mansion of Hitotsu-bashi family was around here”, but the mansion is not there anymore.

A picture map of Edo (now Tōkyō) in 1849 is still there, and we can also browse it online. If we check with the map, we will see that the mansion was between Hitotsu-bashi Bridge and Kanda-bashi Bridge. This area was very large. As of October 2020, there are buildings of Japan Meteorological Agency, and other buildings around the area.
