Tone canal

The Tone canal is between Nagareyama city and Noda city, Chiba. It was necessary to carry supplies by boat. In 1887, a private company was set up and it began digging in 1888 and was completed in 1890.

It connects Tone-gawa river and Edo-gawa river. When it passed from Tone-gawa river to Edo-gawa river, rice was the most abundant. In addition, charcoal, lumber and soy sauce were carried. Conversely, when it passed from Edo-gawa river to Tone-gawa river, miscellaneous goods, empty barrels and fertilizers were carried.

When the most boats pass, it was about 37,600 boats a year (103 boats a day). But the railway (current JR Sōbu line, Jōban line, and Narita line) opened between 1894 and 1901, so river transport gradually declined.

In 1941, the Tone canal was heavily damaged by the typhoon, but the operating company did not have the ability to repair it, so the government acquired it for flood control, and the canal function has ceased. At present, it is a place for people to relax.
