Tennō-ji temple in Yanaka

 There was a five-storied pagoda of Tennō-ji temple in Yanaka Cemetery, Taitō ward, Tōkyō. The nearest station is Nippori station, and close to Ueno Park. Yanaka cemetery is also famous for its cherry blossoms, and about 170 cherry blossom trees bloom in spring.

 A five-storied pagoda was built in 1644, but it was burned down by a great fire in 1772. After that, it was rebuilt in 1791. It was not lost in the battle of Ueno (part of the Boshin war), the Great Kantō Earthquake, and World War Two. It had been at this place for 166 years, and it was a landmark in Yanaka. But it was burned down by an arsonist in 1957. Now, there are only the foundation stone.
