Sakurada-mon gate of Edo Castle

About the gate

This gate was also called Soto-Sakurada-mon gate (outer Sakurada-mon gate) against The Uchi-Sakurada-mon (inner Sakurada-mon) gate. It is usually called Sakurada-mon gate now.

I think the double bridge (called Nijū-bashi Bridge) of The Imperial Palace is very famous. In fact, many tourists once visited the area and enjoyed taking pictures. The gate is close to this area.

I think that the gate is a basic shape and a large gate in Edo Castle. There is the one-story gate called Kōrai-mon gate just across an earth-paved bridge. If you go through the gate, there is a square, and the turreted passageway called Watari-Yagura-mon gate on the right. There is an old picture map of this gate. According to the map, there was a guard house in the square and a large guard house on the right if you went through the turreted passageway.

I have visited and seen the gate many times but have never taken pictures. When I went there to take pictures, the gate was under construction for repair. Furthermore, the day was a holiday, so there were a lot of people. But I think it is wonderful no matter how many times I see it.

The stone walls of the turreted passageway have perfectly cut stones, fitting tightly together and the surface was smooth. Stones of various sizes are used. There were no traces of damage to the stones or holes that could be broken. They were beautiful. I think this is artistic. When I look closely at the stone wall, I found an engraving on the stone. I took a picture of the mark, but the picture was not clear. Looking for the mark is interesting.
