Massive Stone Walls and the Inner Gate

The remains of Naka-no-mon Gate are located inside the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace and are open to the public. Many gates of Edo Castle were square gate complexes made up of an outer gate and an inner gate, but the greatest feature of Naka-no-mon Gate is that it consisted only of an inner gate. Today, only the stone walls remain, but the inner gate once stood on top of them. If you look carefully at the ground as you pass through the gate site, you can still see the foundation stones. After passing through this gate site, you reach Chujaku-mon Gate, and beyond that lies the Honmaru, the main enclosure.

The Obansho Guardhouse and the Hyakunin-bansho Guardhouse

In front of the massive stone walls of the Naka-no-mon Gate site stands a long, narrow guardhouse known as the Hyakunin-bansho. Behind this building, there was once a moat that ran from the west side of Kikyo-mon Gate, passed in front of Gejo-mon Gate, and continued onward. Today, this area has been filled in and is lined with buildings, and it is not open to the general public.
Inside the Naka-no-mon Gate site, there is another guardhouse called the Obansho, which can still be seen today.
